A look back
Back on New Year's Day, I started composing a list of good things that happened in 2004. I realize it's February, but I thought I should list them here anyway.
January
A skit I wrote to help students understand (and avoid) the passive voice debuted in several classes, and it was a big hit. I went to Orlando with Nancy and saw my first NBA game.
Feburary
I saw "Porgy and Bess," one of the best operas of my Charlotte subscription, with Mum. Did lots of roller skating with my Florida pals.
March
I finished my first Web site, written in HTML code. Spent spring break with Chrissy in New York, where I saw a wild'n'crazy improv show at the Upright Citizens Brigade, a hippy-trippy planetarium show at the Museum of Natural History, and a girly-girly Indigo Girls concert. I also visited Jake at the New York Sun. No rhymes there. And I toted my PowerBook all over New York City. March was pretty fun.
April
I finished my second Web site, written in Dreamweaver -- the prototype of what I imagine to be a book.
May
Tore up the highways between North Carolina and Florida, crashing a beach house vacation with Mum & friends at Sunset Beach, going to another opera, "Lucia di Lammermoor," in Charlotte with Mum, and visiting Dana.
June
Moved to Kim's, where the cats have room to snarl with the other cats and I can have coffee in my pajamas. Finally drove home to Cary to stay for a while. Flew to Albany for my 10th high school reunion.
July
Back in Gainesville to teach, I did some work for Gainesville.com. Saw fireworks on the 3rd, which is Gainesville's weird habit. (Hey, I wrote my BA paper about the Fourth of July. I know that's not really when the colonies declared independence anyway!)
August
Mum came down to Florida and we took a road trip along the Gulf Coast, getting as far west as Cajun country in Louisiana before heading back. I started a fun batch of classes, all tying in somehow with my growing interest in new media.
September
In the midst of the second hurricane to wallop Gainesville in three weeks, Kim made me a delicious birthday cake.
October
Traveled to Nicaragua with the Florida Fly-Ins. Learned to talk to strangers that don't speak my language. Threw an awesome Halloween bash with my roommate, who created elaborate "Buffy" vampire costumes. Enjoyed meeting recruiters at a job fair.
November
Another "Amazing Race" started, and I got back in the habit of watching it with friends. Did lots of copy editing, which I do find fun. Had Thanksgiving at the house.
December
Check it out: I finished another Web site, this one done in Flash and reflecting another simmering book topic of mine. We Fly-Ins kids had an exhibition of our work, complete with a reception that let me dress up and pretend to be a glamourous artist.
What a year, huh?
