Ahoy! Those little dots zooming away from the Marco Polo are Zodiac landing craft. Both the big boat and the little ones were exciting ways to travel. The Marco Polo brings an element of incongruous luxury to the Antarctic. Though I spent most time outside enjoying the once-in-a-lifetime view, I also enjoyed the cruise ship's amenities. When it came time to go ashore -- as we see here, at Half Moon Island -- crews lowered the motorized rafts off the bow using a crane, and deployed a metal staircase from the side of the ship. Organized in small groups and outfitted in waterproof pants and life jackets, we waddled penguin-style into the boats and rode to land. |
