Sounding the call Someone warned me before we went to Half-Moon Island that the chinstrap penguins there would sound like braying donkeys compared to the gentle, cooing gentoo penguins we'd seen before. It was true. I don't speak the language, so I don't know why penguins squawk so much. Sometimes it's a reunion greeting, like when one partner returns to the nest after an absence. Sometimes, though, they just throw their heads back and yell. |
